St. Charles' Lwanga Sec. School - Port Moresby PNG

St. Charles Lwanga High School was started in 2007, is a Catholic Agency School run by the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel, at the invitation of the Archbishop of Port Moresby, Bro. Philip Chacko and Bro Ruben Paulus. The pioneers reached Moresby in 2006. They had to work hard to get some rooms organized to have the classes the following year.

This new school took over the premises of what was once a Vocational Youth Centre of the Catholic Church. It was closed for over 10 years due to lack of financial support. When the school started, the existing old workshop sheds were converted into temporary classrooms. We had no good classrooms, library, staffroom, and computer and science labs.

With the limited learning facilities, the students and teachers worked hard and performed very well year after year. All these years, the support from the parents has been excellent. In the National Exams for grade – 10, we had a result of 21% in the year 2008 and for the last three years, it has reached 90% making it one of the best high schools in the National Capital. Now we have good classrooms, library, science and computer labs and other facilities for grades 9 & 10. We hope to upgrade the status of the school to a higher secondary level in the near future. At present, we have a total number of 418 students (boys and girls) and fifteen staff members in the school.
