Montfort Inter College - Lucknow

Mahanagar Boys’ Inter College is situated in the Trans-Gomti area of the State capital, not far from the university and the Bhadshanagar railway station. The Nishat Ganj market is in the immediate vicinity. Mahanagar Boys’ history is an integral part of the history of the Mahanagar colony itself thus let us know a bit about the colony.

The history of Mahanagar colony dates back to 1946 when the provincial Government issued a notification for the acquisition of land in the locality. The layout plan of the Mahanagar colony was finalized sometime later. With the advent of Independence soon after, the scheme was kept in abeyance for some time. In 1953 the State Government took up the matter once again on hand and acquired some land. But the progress of the same was slow; people were unwilling to settle down in the locality. It was the haunt of the Dacoits and bad characters. It lacked amenities like schools and dispensaries. It was far away from the central parts of the city.

The government first moved the 3rd U.P. Battalion; Provincial Armed Constabulary to Mahanagar, and also constructed quarters for their secretariat staff there. Even then the people were not attracted to the colony. Mahanagar Boys’ High School and Mount Carmel Girls’ High School are the contributions of the Diocese of Lucknow to the colony. In 1956 when it was found that the colony was not getting the fillip irrespective of the many measures undertaken by the authorities, the departmental officials approached the Bishop of Lucknow with the request to open two schools in the locality. The Bishop sent his secretary Rev. Fr. Cyril to inspect the place and select two plots. Fr.Cyril made a thorough survey and chose the present sites of the two schools. Soon the diocese took possession of the two plots, they having been placed at its disposal free of premium, on the 6th of May 1957.

Soon after taking possession, due to the hue and cry raised in the press and elsewhere against the proposed missionary schools. Bishop fenced it with barbed wires up to the known boundary. The land was not registered yet and as long as it was not registered the tension continued in the minds of all concerned about the reality of the dream project.

Rev.Bro.Amance who was the representative of the Provincial of the Brothers of St. Gabriel at the site and Rev. Bro. Joachim made ample efforts to get the land registered. Many representations were made to the Municipality in this direction. Rev. Bro. John De Britto took charge in 1961 of the site and the infant school.

Rev.Bro.Britto made many painstaking and relentless efforts to make the land registered and also to get the boundary of the land extended. After a long ordeal, the eastern boundary was extended forty feet along the entire length of the side. So, the area of the Mahanagar Boys’ Inter College is five and a half acres of land.

The History of the institution will not be complete without the mention of the village which flourished in the land where the present MahanagarBoys stands. A Muslim Village called ‘Peer Ka Purwa’ occupied the Mahanagar Boys’ Campus. The villagers were Milkmen by profession and had been occupants of the land for over a hundred years. The Government offered them land elsewhere and also compensation. They accepted all that but would not quit the campus. It was a constant nuisance on the campus as long as they remained on the campus. They used to dirty the whole compound and heap Mountains of cow dung all around the settlement. The Bishop, Bro.AmanceBro.Joachim and Bro.Britto made many representations to the Municipality to affect the evacuation of the colony from the campus but the Villagers had a strong political pull and managed for quite some time inside the campus. With constant representation to the Municipality and with the help of some of the influential Parents Rev.Bro.Britto managed to get the villagers evacuated from the Campus.

Once the land was demarcated and the compound wall constructed the issue of settling the lease rent surfaced. Again the Brothers worked hard to make things better for the institution. After having met with success in all these basic problems of an infant institution Brothers now worked hard to get the land registered. Here too as usual lots of difficulties arose and the Brothers worked with determination and focused mind persisting in their representation to the municipality and making all the required objections cleared. And by the grace of God on 14th January 1964, the land was registered.

The plan of the school building was prepared by Mr.Kedarnath Misra, Town and village planner to the Government of U.P. and approved by the municipality on 22.11.1958. It provides for a block of administrative rooms in front and a double line of classrooms on either wing, each with a central corridor. The foundations of the buildings are meant for a three-story structure. This is as per the plan prepared by the Town planner. Rev. Bro. Amance was deputed by the Provincial to be his representative on the spot during the progress of the work. He arrived in Lucknow on 15.1.1959 and stayed a few days at the Bishop's house, but later moved to Mahanagar where he occupied a room in Mr. S. R. Khanna’s house. Rev. Bro. Joachim joined him on 10.06.1959 and was appointed Principal of the school on 15.6.1959. The ground floor of the building was completed by 10.07.1959.

The School was officially opened on 15.07.1959 with about 40 pupils on the rolls, distributed into four classes. Classes III, IV & V are English medium and class VI is Hindi medium. There were six teachers on the staff, including three Brothers. Three Brothers were Rev. Bro.Joachim, Brothers Ignatius, and Patrick.

The recognition of the school though was sought from the U.P.Board of Education nothing came through. It was indeed a very difficult process due to many reasons that are built into the education system of Uttar Pradesh. Our school had a high rate of fee, which was not allowed by the board. Only the Anglo-Indian Schools were allowed to collect fees higher than the allowed fee rate of the board. Also, our school was an English medium school. The Board was not recognizing any more English medium schools in U.P. They were rather converting the existing English medium schools into Hindi medium. Thus it was very difficult to get the recognition. Bro.Joachim had made several attempts to that effect but did not succeed. Bro.Britto too tried but the first batch of eighth-class students had to write privately as the institution was not recognized. After many efforts, the school was recognized as a Boy’s school under section 11 of the Intermediate Education Act with effect from the High school examination of 1965.

Rev. Bro.Joachim was the first Principal of the fledgling institution. He remained in that capacity till 22.05.1961. Rev.Bro.Britto shouldered the responsibility from then on. Both founding Principals had to work very hard to bring up the institution. The school required everything from land to recognition of the school. The first team of Brothers in the school was Rev. Bro. Amance who was the representative of the Provincial in looking after the initial works of the school building, Bro.Joachim the first Principal of the School, Bro. Ignatius, Bro. Patrick, Bro. Lambert, Bro. Hilarious, Bro. John De Britto who was Principal from 26.06.61 to 30.06.66 and Bro. Benedict.

In 1965 - 66 Bro.Britto left for the Second Novitiate in Europe and then Bro. Ignatius the present-dayBro.C.M.JOSEPH, who was already in Lucknow for quite some time, became the acting Director and Principal. Bro. C.M. Joseph contributed to the growth of the School in the period of time that he had in Mahanagar Lucknow.

Bro. Claude came to Lucknow in 1966. Bro.Britto was asked by the Provincial to help Bro. Claude is getting acclimatized to face the new academic year. And after that Bro.Britto left for Europe. Bro. Claude continued the good works that were begun by his predecessors. He too strove hard to bring up the institution to the glory of a Standard English Medium School in the city. It is important that we recall the opposition of the general public to the arrival of missionaries to the Mahanagar colony. As the school began to compete with the other best schools in the city, people forgot all the antagonism and started to appreciate the school and the good works of the Brothers. Many people started to crowd around for admissionto the school and slowly and steadily the dream of a good School became a reality.

Rev. Bro. Claude was the Principal and Superior of MahanagarBoys in 1969. He went down to the south in October 1969, as his mother was seriously ill. He stayed there for some time and by the end of December 1969 he informed Bro.John of S.H. the then Regional Superior that he would like to stay somewhere in the south as his mother’s death was imminent. Bro.John had no option other than to replace Bro.Claude with somebody else to take up the responsibility as Principal and Superior at Mahanagar Boys’. The Regional Superior's office was at Kanke. At that time Bro.Benjamin was the Local Superior and Headmaster of St.Aloysius School, Ranchi. Bro.John asked Bro.Benjamin to proceed to Lucknow to take charge of that institution. As per the direction of the Regional Superior Bro.Benjamin reached Lucknow and took charge of the school and community in the first week of January 1970. The other Brothers of the community were Bro.Ignatius, Bro.ThomasKappadayil, Bro.Gilbert Pinto and Bro.Joseph Regis, Bro.S.A.Ignatious and Bro.Thomas Kappadayil are now ex-brothers.

Bro. Benjamin took charge of the school and Community in absentia of his predecessor. So he could hardly get any direct information regarding the assets and liabilities of the school and the community.

The school was short of rooms. The Brothers did not have a kitchen. There was a little space under the left-wing staircase. Food used to be prepared there and brought to the first room of the left-wing portion. Now that room is used as the board room. The kitchen was very narrow and the roof was very low. No cook stayed more than a month or two as the kitchen was like a furnace except in December and January. Bro.Benjamin obtained the necessary permission and built the kitchen in May - June 1970 and Brothers had been using that kitchen till the Brothers occupied the new Brothers Quarters in December 1995. At present the kitchen building is used as the Syndicate Bank M.B.I.C.Extension. In 1970 the School building was double-storied except the half portion of the left wing. The built-up half portion was a hall. Due to shortages of classrooms, one class was held in the hall. Saturdays were a half working day and in the second half, there was the custom of screening a movie for the students. As long as the movie program lasted, it was a real agony for the Principal and the concerned Bros. The hall used to be terribly overcrowded. The strength of the school had reached over a thousand students. Thus, it was verydifficultto continue with the film show; so aftera year, it waswound up. As theschool required more classrooms, Bro.Benjamin constructedthreeclassroomsanda smallvisitor’sroomparalleltothehallin May - June 1971. Thehallwasalsoconvertedintothreeclassrooms later.

Bro.Benjamin also got many trees planted all around the campus though there were many existing ones. In May - June 1972 the assembly area was paved. Today the area is not used for assembly, as it is too narrow an area to hold the assembly.

The land where the present Montfort School is situated was demarcated for a hostel for prospective students of Mahanagar Boys’ School. Bro.Benjamin took possession of that land in 1972 with the help of a well-wisher and parent named Mr.Atma Ram Baurai. Till 1970 the sections were not even, due to the various problems the school had to face in the beginning stage. Bro.Benjamin got the sections from 3rd to 10th regularized. The studentsstudied in Mount Carmel till 2nd standard and then came to Mahanagar Boys’.
Brothers in the community during the tenure of Bro. Benjamin was Bro. Gilbert Pinto, Bro. Thomas Kappadayil, Bro. S. A. Ignatious, Bro. Joseph Regis, Bro. K. T. Raja, Bro. David, Bro. Carlous Minj, Bro. C. J. James.

Bro. Benjamin was transferred to St. Charles Inter College and the late Bro.John de Montfort took charge of the Mahanagar Boys’. Bro.John de Montfort expressed his reservations against bringing up a hostel as agreed before with the diocese for the Catholic children of the Diocese. However, he discussed with the Bishop and agreed to accommodate the catholic children in the Sardhana Hostel. A few Lucknow Catholics were in the boarding of Sardhana due to this agreement. This decision proved wise because any time the number of catholic hostlers did not cross more than five. Thus a hostel would have been an expensive and inappropriate headache as the hostlers would not have been able to come up to the standard of the Mahanagar Boys'.

For the next five years Rev. Bro. John De Montfort (Paschal Nellikunnel) put his dedicated service to make the institution into a glorious stage. The standard of the institution became an outstanding one. In 1975 there were thirty students and 27 staff, out of whom 18 were gents and 9 were ladies. Bro.John De Montfort was known for his dedication to the academic job that he had to perform and also the works that he had to guide in Brothers, teachers, and students. Bro. Montfort also is known for the strict discipline that he enforced on everybody concerned including himself. Mahanagar Boys’ High School under Rev. Bro. John De Montfort reached new heights and the school became known for the excellent results it produced in board exams.

The Brothers who worked during Brother Montfort’s tenure in Mahanagar Boys’ were Bro. Gilbert, Bro. Thomas Kappadayil, Bro. David, Bro. C. J. James, Bro. Cherian, Bro. Jacob Kavungal, Bro. Herbert, Bro.Herman Tete.

Bro. Joseph Mattempally became the Principal and Superior of the Brothers community in 1978-79. He too contributed his share to the institution. Rev. Bro. Philip Thadathil took over the reins of the esteemed institution Mahanagar Boys’ High School in 1979.

The years from 1979 to ahead were a race to quality education. A few lines from the message of the Principal on the occasion of the silver jubilee celebration of the Mahanagar Boys’ High School read as follows. “1983 was the third consecutive year in which our students figured in the merit-list of the U.P. Board, with three students in 1981, one student in 1982, and two students in 1983. Last year also was the third consecutive year in which our students secured 100% success in the U. P. High School Board Examination. In 1983, 120 students appeared in the Board examination and all of them came out successful with 118 first divisions and two second divisions. Vishwarajan and Feroz Ahamed secured 4th and 8th in the U.P. merit list with 441 and 434 marks respectively”. This is self-explanatory in terms of the school’s race towards quality education. The school though growing in quality and quantity, had not yet become a higher secondary. Bro. Philip tried his hand at it. He made the lab building on the top of the right wing of the first floor. The year 1984 is marked in the history of the institution, as the institution celebrated the silver jubilee of its existence and also the new academic year welcomed the intermediate session. The Mahangar Boys’ High School became the Mahanagar Boys’ Inter College. The little hesitant bud of 1959 had become a full-blossomed Inter College catering to the needs of many students in the Trans-Gomti area of the city.

It is to be noted that the Institution continues to secure 100% results both in the High School and Intermediate Board Exams with six to seven state ranks year after year. This has special significance today against the slipshod approach to evaluation, ranks being very high with over 220 students in each category.

The birth of another baby in the form of Montfort School took place under the able guidance of Bro.Philip the Principal of Mahanagar Boys’ Inter College. The school was meant to cater to the needs of the Mahanagar Boys’ School’s primary section. In 1982 – 83 the proposed Montfort School began in the laboratory building of high school. Rev.Bro.Mathias became the in-charge of the classes. In 1984 Bro.K.S.Scaria became the first Principal of Montfort School. Slowly and steadily the institution grew and became a full-fledged primary school from L.K.G. to class five by 1994. Montfort school has two shifts even today; the first shift is for classes 2nd to 5th ofboth media and the second shift is for Classes L.K.G. to I.

The Brothers who worked relentlessly with Brother Philip in bringing up the institution to this glory were Bro. K. S. Scaria, Bro. K. T. John, Bro. M. O. Sebastian, Bro. Chacko Azhakath, Bro.Gabriel Lakara, Bro.Jacob Panjikaran, Bro.Thomas Madapallikunnel, Bro. Herbert, Bro.David, Bro.Mathias, Bro.George Pottakaran, Bro.Antony Moreli.

Bro.Mani V.J. took over the institution in 1985 and continued the good and dedicated work, which his predecessors were doing.

Brother Philip had built up the lab building but the lab was not yet ready for use. Thus Bro.Mani looked into the completion of the lab with all the necessary equipment fixtures. He felt the need for developing the institution in different other activities like sports, and extracurricular activities. The present Basketball field is his contribution to the institution. He also was instrumental in the completion of the compound wall in certain areas, which were not completed due to various reasons. This four-year term of Bro. Mani deepened the roots of the Intermediate section.

The Brothers who put in their dedicated service to the growth of Mahanagar Boys' Inter College under the leadership of Bro.Mani was - Bro.Thomas Madapallikunnel, Bro.Antony Moreli, Bro.George Pottakaran, Bro.Gregorysurin.

Bro.Benjamin took control of the institution a second time in 1989. He took charge from the outgoing Principal Bro.V.J.Mani. Bro.Joseph Gabriel was the Superior of the institution and he was also the Vice Principal. Bro.Thomas Madapallikunnel was the in charge of Montfort School at that time. Bros.Gregory Surin, James K.C. and Shaji Thomas the candidate, were the other members of the community. In the month of November Bro.Thomas was transferred to Roorkey and Bro.ChackoAzhakath replaced him in the Primary. One of the major events in that year was the silver jubilee celebration of Bro.Thomas Maddapallikunnel.

The next year the community had the following Brothers. Bro.Joseph Gabriel Local Superior, Bro.Benjamin the Principal, Bro.Gregory, Bro.Simon, Bro.James K.C. The boundary wall of the compound from the cycle shed to the present Montfort Home gate was raised by one meter.

In 1991 Bro.Joseph Gabriel continued to be the Local Superior and took charge of the Primary as well. Bro.Sabu was the new addition to the Brothers' staff. Bro.James and Simon were transferred. In Montfort Primary School there was no wall on the side of the Village. When Bro.Philip was constructing the wall to demarcate the compound the villagers brought a stay order claiming the land was theirs. Hence, about 70 to 80 length boundary wall could not be completed. One Mr.S.N.Gupta Session Judge who is also a parent obtained the necessary permission from the court to build the wall. Bro. Benjamin quietly got police protection during the construction work. He got the full cooperation of Sr. Helene Superior, Cannossa Convent for she sent all the workers from their building site for a day. There were fifteen masons and 35 laborers. The Police Inspector accompanied by a few Constables went to the construction site and announced that the Brothers had obtained permission from the court to rebuild the wall and that if anyone tried to stop the work they could be arrested for contempt of court. The work started at 9 a.m. and ended at 8 p.m. Thus one of the major problems of Montfort School was partially solved. Bros.K.S.Scaria and Sabu left the community. Bro.Scaria left for Delhi.

Bro.Sabu was not allowed to renew his vows and so he left the congregation. The Principal prepared a plan for an auditorium with an architect. The Provincial Council gave the required permission for the same and so the Present auditorium took shape on the second floor of the school building. The hall, which existed on the first floor, was converted into classrooms. It was inaugurated in April 1995. Along with that the Superior, and the charge of the Primary School, Bro.George also had taken the initiative in getting a Brothers community building constructed at the end corner of the School campus. And that too became a reality. Now the Brothershave a residence, though the person who took the initiative is an ex-brother.

Brothers who worked in the school from 1991 to 1995 were Brother Joseph Gabriel the Superior of the community and in charge of the Primary School, Bro.Benjamin the Principal of the Senior School, Bro.K.S.Scaria, Bro.Gregory Surin, Bro.Sabu M.J., Bro.Barnabas Tete, Bro.Joseph Stephen, Bro.Mathew Montfort, Bro.K.J.George, Superior and incharge of Montfort School, Bro.Thampy Alex and Bro. John Bosco.

Bro.Emmanuel P.J. took over from his predecessor Bro.Benjamin the responsibility for the institution in July 1996. Bro.Emmanuel added a new dimension to school education in the field of the all-round development of students through encouraging various co-curricular activities. The bookworms were encouraged to look into other areas of their personality, which would in the long run help them bring out the best in themselves. A couple of such deserves mentioning. The inter-collegiate cultural bonanza by the name MICFEST addresses the creative potential of senior students both boys and girls in the various communication skills of song and dance, music, mime, oration, and judgments based on the cultural ethos of the Nation. It is significant to note that the Department of Culture, Govt.of U.P sponsors MICFEST. Another unique program of gravity is Grandparents Day celebrated in totally different styles every year to inculcate among the students forthright appreciation and respect for the elderly in Society who are otherwise neglected.
One of the important administrative issues that bothered the Brothers in 1997 related to the P.F. Commissioner’s order to pay all dues and damages of M.B.I.C. Staff w.e.f. 1982 to date running into several lakhs, under threat of arrest of the Principal. This was owing to the adaptation of the pension scheme in the school w.e.f. 1979 which benefitted the Staff better but not in keeping with the P.F. rules. Several applications to the Commissioner for exemption did not render any dividend. As such a final decision was made and no more employees who retired after 1998 are paid pension. We have also obtained a stay from the Honorable High Court against paying damages on the Staff P.F. dues. This has displeased ½ dozen employees on their retirement who appealed to the High Court demanding restoration of pension in their cases but it is unlikely that they get a favorable order.

They have not preferred to withdraw their P.F. amounts either on retiring. At present, there are eleven employees of MBIC who are drawing pension from the Institution. One cannot imagine how a fee-levying institution under strict budgeting is able to pay pensions to the staff in the long run. For example, the first employee who retired in 1986 has already drawn a sum nearing 6 lakhs from the Institutions.
In an attempt to solve the water problem which had been a part of the institution for a long, he dug two Borewells. One at the Montfort campus and the other at M.B.I.C. He also replaced the front gates, which were too old, and replaced the driving in a semi-circle in front of the college. The playing field at Mahanagar was in very bad shape Bro.Emmanuel paid special attention to it. He got it plowed, leveled, and rolled. Provisions for watering the entire field with sprinkler pipes were also made. Today the field is like a beautiful green carpet spread. The stage for the daily assembly was also shifted from the building side to the field side. As a result, the students can comfortably stand for the assembly.

The damaged floor of the entire left wing classrooms was redone with skirting up to three feet height on the wall. A Cantilever roof with green plastic sheets was made behind the office and the parlor in order to facilitate a corridor effect in rain. The Syndicate bank extension counter, which used to create a bit of nuisance, was shifted from the right wing to an independent situation, paying adequate care to the safety needs of a bank. It was done keeping in mind everyone's convenience. The old kitchen garden was converted into an orderly cycle stand and the entire cycle stand was paved. Reflooring of the entire classrooms and the snocem washing of the building also was done. The entire unbuilt area in the front and back of Montfort School also was done with a protective metal fence around the garden. Montfort School building too had a lot of flooring, painting, and other maintenance work done. A mobile Basketball board was also made at Montfort School to encourage young ones to pick up some games.

The old Fiat Car was sold and a new Indica car was bought for the community of the Brothers. Computer facilities at the college were updated with the installation of multi-media and ten others with Pentium II.

The new residence of the brothers had a lot of problems due to certain faulty construction. The sewage disposal system of the building had collapsed. The running water pipes also developed serious leakage. The entire system is redone. A new bore well was built at the residence of the Brothers in order to solve the water problem.

A new chapter was added to the Montfort School when a team of Benedictine sisters from Bhopal arrived in Lucknow to render their services in managing the Primary School.

The sisters at the moment are doing a commendable job in collaboration with the Brothers. The Brothers who worked with Brother Emmanuel were Bro. Monachan, Bro.John of the S.H, Bro.John Bosco, Bro.James Mathew, Bro.Kata Bartholomeo, Bro.Thomas Madapally, Bro.K.C.James. Brothers who are now in the community are Bro. P.J. Emmanuel, Bro.Gracious T.J, Bro.Shaji Joseph and Bro. Harish John.

A new Intermediate Block with nine classrooms, a new Principal’s office, and an administrative block was built during the regime of Bro. Emmanuel. It was formally inaugurated in July 2004. The introduction of NIOS A. I. Centre at the college was another progressive step taken by him.

Change of name from Mahanagar Boys to Montfort Inter College, starting co-education from Primary classes, construction of the New Primary School Building (still under construction), putting up the gigantic outdoor stage, setting up the Library and Computer Lab in the basement of the Intermediate Block, setting up fire safety devices in the whole premises are some of the outstanding contributions of Rev. Bro. Monachan K.K., the twelfth Principal who is known for his administrative acumen and Managerial Skills. The exposure of students to various co-curricular activities at the district, state, and national levels and maintenance of constructive discipline on the campus are other feathers added to his cap. His relentless efforts to obtain the No Objection Certificate from the U.P. Government for affiliating the College to the CBSE Board are commendable.

As the college is celebrating Golden Sheen turning blue, with Rev. Bro. James K.C. at the helm, and a team of dedicated staff, we resolve to march ahead into a still brighter future. The wheel of progress shall never come to a halt and we shall be true to our motto of forming students who can contribute towards the building of a just society.

The school motto “Truth is Light” signifies the fact. The truth is the bedrock of all lasting progress. Let the lamp of knowledge spread its rays and let every heart, mind, and soul be illumined.

Brother James KC took over from his predecessor Bro.Monachan K.K. the responsibility of the institution in May2009.The college celebrates the Golden Jubilee year.A Gala celebration of the golden jubilee was held on 14th November 2009 on the college grounds.
